WORLD'S OLDEST MAN DIES AT 116 IN SOUTH AFRICA

A South African who was thought to be the oldest man in the world has died at the age of 116.

Fredie Blom's identity documents showed he was born in Eastern Cape province in May 1904, although that was never verified by Guinness World Records.

When he was a teenager, his entire family was wiped out by the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. He went on to survive two world wars and apartheid.

Mr Blom told the BBC in 2018 that there was no special secret to his longevity.

"There's only one thing - it's the man above [God]. He's got all the power. I have nothing. I can drop over any time but He holds me," he said.

Mr Blom spent most of his life as a labourer - first on a farm and then in the construction industry - and only retired when he was in his 80s.

Although he gave up drinking many years ago, he was a regular smoker.

However, a coronavirus-related lockdown imposed by the South African government reportedly meant he was unable to buy tobacco to roll his own cigarettes on his 116th birthday.

Mr Blom's family said he died of natural causes in Cape Town on Saturday.

"Two weeks ago oupa [grandfather] was still chopping wood," family spokesman Andre Naidoo told AFP news agency. "He was a strong man, full of pride."

But within days Mr Blom shrank "from a big man to a small person", he added.

Mr Naidoo said the family did not believe his death was related to Covid-19.

14 BED CLINIC BUILT IN YAHAYA KWANDE COMMUNITY

By Gyang Bere, Jos A former member of the House of Representatives in the Eighth National Assembly, Dr. Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, recently constructed and furnished a 14-bed clinic for residents of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. It was learnt that the clinic, located in the centre of Jos, would serve the health needs of the less privileged in society. The Yahaya Kwande Community Clinic has female and male wards, children and delivery units and a consulting room for doctors and nurses where emergency cases would be attended to. Dr. Suleiman commenced the construction of the clinic as part of his constituency projects during the Eighth Assembly but couldn’t finish it before he left the House of Representatives in 2019. He completed, furnished and handed over the facility to the community on Monday, August 24. Tradition demands that Aunt must have sex with niece's groom as potency test.

In Uganda, according to the custom of the Banyankole community tribe, the aunt of the bride must have sex with the groom as a "potency test", and furthermore, has to test the bride's virginity, when the couple wants to get married. Some traditions assert that the husband would first have sex with the aunt before proceeding to have it with the bride. "I PREFER KIRIKIRI PRISON TO LONDON PRISON" - MICHAEL ADEBOWALE

Nigerian Islamic extremist, Michael Adebowale, who is currently in jail for mudering British soldier, Lee Rigley in 2013 is reportedly making a bid to serve out the rest of his sentence in a Nigerian jail.
