The animal was unable to free itself from the tree trunks in the Sholayar forest range in India and died later.
Wildlife activist Rajeev N Kurup said: 'The accident happened when the wild elephant tried to acquire jackfruit from the higher branches of the tree.
'It slipped and got its feet entangled in the trunk and subsequently died.'
Indian elephants may spend up to 19 hours a day feeding and graze mainly on grasses, but large amounts of tree bark, roots, leaves and small stems are also eaten.
