The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday fulfilled his promise to the people of Badagry with the restoration of power supply to some communities within the Badagry West Local Council Development Area of the State which had been disconnected from the national grid since 1999.
The Governor who was represented at the commissioning by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensure inclusive growth in order to make life more comfortable for everyone irrespective of their location within the state.
Governor Ambode described the restoration of electricity to the people of the area as an intervention of the State’s Light Up Lagos initiative designed to improve the socio-economic well-being of all residents of the State, saying that the importance of the energy for socio-economic growth and development of any community cannot be over-emphasized.
“By this intervention under the “Light Up Lagos”, this initiative will tremendously improve the socio-economic well-being of the area, we have demonstrated once again our commitment to inclusive growth”, he said.
He expressed his excitement about the positive impact which the electrification intervention which will bring to the people in the area, describing it as a befitting gift to the residents as the state celebrates her golden jubilee anniversary.
Ambode said that the Government recognises the positive impact the electrification intervention will bring to the people of the communities and assured the people that they will not be forgotten in the scheme of development going on across the state.
According to him, “We recognise the importance of these communities in facilitating inter-State / regional trade as well as ensuring the security of life and property. We will, therefore, pay greater attention to the provision of infrastructure and basic amenities within these communities”.
Ambode also charged the residents, youths and leaders of the communities, to take ownership of the electrification facilities, assuring them of more projects for the axis.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Olawale Oluwo described the electrification of the area as a major achievement which underscores the importance of the communities located along the country’s border.
He, however, commended the Governor for coming to the rescue of the forty communities within Gbaji to Seme corridor with its rural electrification initiative.
