IHIM COMMUNITY UNDER EROSION SIEGE - MONARCH APPEALS TO GOVERNMENT

The traditional ruler of Ihim community in Isiala Mbano Council area of Imo State, HRH Eze Oliver Ohanweh, has dispatched a Save Our Soul message to the local, state and federal governments, to come to the aid of the community devastated by gully erosion called “Alaka Madu gully erosion.”
According to the monarch, the disaster which is over 150ft deep and 500 metres in length has claimed many lives, with over 12 villages severed from the rest of the community, while both the community primary school and the St Peter’s Anglican Church in the area have been destroyed.

The traditional ruler, who disclosed this at the 2016 Iji Cultural festival, said in addition to the devastation of farmlands and houses, his palace had come under threat as a result of the surging gully. He lamented that efforts to attract the attention of relevant government agencies to save the situation had yielded no positive results.

Eze Ohanweh claimed the problem erupted because Biafran soldiers used the site as a camp and buried their dead colleagues there during the three-year civil war in the country.

“I am once more appealing to the various levels of government and the appropriate international agencies to come to our rescue because the issue at stake is a serious threat which is beyond my capability to handle and it can cause an earthquake,” he said.

The monarch, while commending Governor Rochas Okorocha for his dynamic, purposeful and people oriented leadership, appealed to the state government to provide good roads and more infrastructure for the people.
