"WE CAN'T KEEP FEEDING INMATES, THEY MUST START FARMING" - NPS BOSS JAFARU AHMED

The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) has disclosed that it intends to set up specialised farm centres so that prisoners will be able to feed themselves.

Jaffaru Ahmed, comptroller-general general of NPS, who said this on Monday when he appeared before the house of representatives committee on interior revealed that every year, the service spends about N18 million to feed over 70,000 inmates across the country.

The prisons boss, who added that the NPS owed about N5 billion to contractors for feeding prisoners and told the committee that N6 billion had been approved to employ 6,545 officials into various cadre in the NPS, said; 
“We intend to set up specialised farm centres, and train them towards production and make prisons able to feed itself,”

“We need enough money and massive money to rehabilitate prisons, build new prisons and get away from urban centres.

“There is need to move prisons out of urban centres because there is no room of expansion and to site industries and install equipment for food processing to reduce the burden on government, some of them are over 100 years.”

AJEGULE COMMUNITY, OTHERS RECEIVE MOSQUITO NETS FROM IKEJA ELECTRIC

By Deji Lambo In commemoration of this year’s World Malaria Day electricity distribution firm, Ikeja Electric, has donated mosquito nets to residents of Ajegunle community in the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State. The Corporate Social Responsibility and Brand’s Supervisor, IE, Adebimpe Akintola, said apart from Ajegunle, five other communities in the state were also beneficiaries of the gesture targeted at 6,000 residents. Akintola said apart from giving out mosquito nets, the firm was also educating residents on the best way to prevent malaria. She said, “We are concurrently running this intervention across six different communities in the state and our plan is to target at least 1,000 people in each of the six locations where the project is being executed. 7 STUDENTS AND ONE TEACHER KIDNAPPED IN DAMBO-KASAYA COMMUNITY

By Ibrahim Mohammed Armed men on Monday attacked a school in Kaduna, killing one person and kidnapping seven students and a teacher, residents said. The armed men killed a man and abducted seven students and a teacher of Prince Academy, located at Damba-Kasaya village in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The incident happened around 8 a.m. on Monday when the gunmen stormed the rural community while the students were preparing for their Junior secondary school examination‎.
