AMAHOR COMMUNITY WATER-SIDE WHERE TWO RIVERS MEET WAS VISITED BY EDO GOVERNOR

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has visited the Amahor waterside to ascertain the tourism viability of two rivers which formed a confluence at Amahor town in Igueben Local Government Area of the state.

During the tour around the water-side, located inside a forest reserve, the governor visited a rest house used by colonial masters when they visited the water-side and rain forest years ago.

The governor said that the area, when developed, would boost economic activities and draw tourist attraction to view the natural wonder of the rivers that do not mix.
‘We are trying to identify economic opportunities and also the land marks we have for economic activities such as that for tourism and agricultural production.

‘We understand that we have a lot of land marks and space here. 
Most importantly, we came here to appreciate nature and begin to direct interest to places like this so that people can come here for relaxation and to appreciate nature,’’ he said.

MENINGITIS AFFECTED COMMUNITIES RECEIVES 500,000 DOSES OF VACCINES

Nigeria has received 500,000 doses of meningitis C containing vaccine to combat the epidemic in the country, the WHO has said. The doses were sent by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, an organisation that coordinates the provision of vaccine during outbreak emergencies. Dr Wondimagegnehu Alemu, the WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, said this in a statement in Abuja on Friday. He said the vaccines, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, have been administered in Zamfara and Katsina States where the disease was most endemic. Alemu said an additional 820,000 doses of the meningitis C conjugate vaccine donated by the UK government to WHO was currently being sent to Nigeria. He said in the last week, the ICG also sent 341,000 doses of the meningitis C-containing vaccine to Niger Republic. CHIEF JUDGE FREES 153 PRISONERS FROM KIRIKIRI PRISON

153 inmates of Kirikiri prison have been released under an amnesty program by the Lagos State Chief Judge, Olufunmilayo Atilade as part of an exercise to decongest the prisons. The freed 153 persons included 129 inmates of the Medium Prison and 24 inmates of the Maximum Prisons in Kirikiri. Three of the inmates who gained their freedom in the exercise had been standing trial for more than fifteen years.

NO MORE STREET TRADING IN UMUAHIA CITY CENTER - COUNCIL BOSS

By Joe Akwarandu, Umuahia The Umuahia North local government area says its current move to end the perennial street trading and indiscriminate loading of vehicles and tricycles within the Isigate axis was aimed at tackling the traffic snarl in the city; not to dislodge traders. Orient Daily gathered that the council began the enforcement of order prohibiting street trading and indiscriminate loading and picking of passengers within the congested Isigate, the city center on April 1. Mostly affected areas were Warri Street, Owerri and Umuwaya roads as well as other adjoining streets within the city centre where petty traders and commercial vehicle operators have converted to markets stalls and mini parks. Speaking after inspecting the extent of compliance, the deputy chairman of the council, Eze Okwulehie, who personally supervised the execution of the order said that the measure was to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
