COLLEGE GIRL FROM SICHUAN PROVINCE DONATES HEART

The recent death of college student Zhou Yang, following a long battle with cancer, was a tragedy. But the 21-year-old from Yibin, Sichuan Province achieved so much in her short life, and continues to help others even after her passing.
Zhou’s blog detailing her five-year battle with cancer continues to inspire and motivate others, while local media report that the donation of her heart, liver and kidneys has saved four patients.

Her brain tumor was discovered back in high school, but she still managed gain access to college with a very good score, after an initial surgery that cost more than 100,000 yuan (15,000 US dollars) of her family’s savings.

Sadly, however, the cancer returned and Zhou underwent a second surgery in her junior year. After this, she had to take time out from school because of blurred vision.

Zhou was worried that the expensive medical costs were placing her family in debt, and so rejected further treatment. She passed away in late August.

Poignantly, Zhou chose to write a series of blogs dedicated to spreading positive messages and building confidence in other patients to live life with faith and courage.

And she also decided to donate her organs to those in desperate need. All the four patients who received her organ donations had a chance to reunite with their families during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Zhou’s mom expressed gratitude that the organ donation “continues her girl’s life in another way.”
