POLICE PATROL VAN CRASHES INTO GUTTER IN KUBWA COMMUNITY - 3 DEAD

Three police officers, on Sunday, lost their lives in an accident along the Kubwa-Zuba Expressway, when the patrol van in which they were traveling experienced a burst tyre and crashed into a drainage.

It was learned that the accident, which occurred opposite the Gwarimpa Estate section of the road, involved operatives of the Special Tactical Squad (STS) of the Police attached to the Force Headquarters.

An eyewitness said the speed of the vehicle and the impact of the collision with the hard drainage pavement caused the instant death of the three officers, while others sustained various degrees of injuries.

The eyewitness said, “I was about crossing the road to the other lane when the police patrol van, while on top speed, suddenly lost control and crashed into the drainage divide, leaving three policemen dead.”

The police officer’s were said to be heading to Kaduna for a special assignment before the accident occurred.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the FCT Emmergency Management Agency were later seen evacuating the bodies to an undisclosed hospital.

FCT Police Public Relation’s Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident.

She said it was a sad development, pointing out that she did not have details of the number of casualty involved in the accident.

MENINGITIS AFFECTED COMMUNITIES RECEIVES 500,000 DOSES OF VACCINES

Nigeria has received 500,000 doses of meningitis C containing vaccine to combat the epidemic in the country, the WHO has said. The doses were sent by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, an organisation that coordinates the provision of vaccine during outbreak emergencies. Dr Wondimagegnehu Alemu, the WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, said this in a statement in Abuja on Friday. He said the vaccines, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, have been administered in Zamfara and Katsina States where the disease was most endemic. Alemu said an additional 820,000 doses of the meningitis C conjugate vaccine donated by the UK government to WHO was currently being sent to Nigeria. He said in the last week, the ICG also sent 341,000 doses of the meningitis C-containing vaccine to Niger Republic. CHIEF JUDGE FREES 153 PRISONERS FROM KIRIKIRI PRISON

153 inmates of Kirikiri prison have been released under an amnesty program by the Lagos State Chief Judge, Olufunmilayo Atilade as part of an exercise to decongest the prisons. The freed 153 persons included 129 inmates of the Medium Prison and 24 inmates of the Maximum Prisons in Kirikiri. Three of the inmates who gained their freedom in the exercise had been standing trial for more than fifteen years.
