CHINESE DRUG TRAFFICER ESCAPES JAIL THROUGH SEWERS IN JAKARTA COMMUNITY

A Chinese drug trafficker facing a death sentence has escaped from jail on the outskirts of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, by tunneling through the sewers, police have said.

Cai Changpan, 37, who was convicted of methamphetamine smuggling, dug a hole from his cell at the prison in the Tangerang area into waste pipes and from there to a road outside, a Jakarta police spokesman, Yusri Yunus, said.

According to a cellmate, Cai had planned the escape, which took place on 14 September, for five to six months using tools from a construction project in the prison kitchen, Yunus said.

Rika Aprianti, a spokeswoman for Indonesia’s directorate general of prisons, told media the trafficker, who also uses the name Cai Ji Fan, had timed his escape to the changing of the guards.

According to the Indonesian news website detik.com, he was sentenced to death in 2017 for trafficking 135kg of crystal meth. A police investigation found 70kg of meth hidden in chicken coop cleaner equipment.

Cai had previously broken out of a Jakarta police detention centre in 2017 by breaking a hole in a bathroom wall.

No lawyer or representative for Cai was immediately reachable for comment.

Police have put him on their most wanted list.

MENINGITIS AFFECTED COMMUNITIES RECEIVES 500,000 DOSES OF VACCINES

Nigeria has received 500,000 doses of meningitis C containing vaccine to combat the epidemic in the country, the WHO has said. The doses were sent by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, an organisation that coordinates the provision of vaccine during outbreak emergencies. Dr Wondimagegnehu Alemu, the WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, said this in a statement in Abuja on Friday. He said the vaccines, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, have been administered in Zamfara and Katsina States where the disease was most endemic. Alemu said an additional 820,000 doses of the meningitis C conjugate vaccine donated by the UK government to WHO was currently being sent to Nigeria. He said in the last week, the ICG also sent 341,000 doses of the meningitis C-containing vaccine to Niger Republic. CHIEF JUDGE FREES 153 PRISONERS FROM KIRIKIRI PRISON

153 inmates of Kirikiri prison have been released under an amnesty program by the Lagos State Chief Judge, Olufunmilayo Atilade as part of an exercise to decongest the prisons. The freed 153 persons included 129 inmates of the Medium Prison and 24 inmates of the Maximum Prisons in Kirikiri. Three of the inmates who gained their freedom in the exercise had been standing trial for more than fifteen years.
