GBATSE COMMUNITY STONES SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBERS TO DEATH

By Tor Vande-Acka

Gbatse community of Ushongo Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State on Sunday reportedly stoned three armed robbery suspects to death.

Gbatse is the same area where a kidnapper and ritualist recently confessed to killing sixteen persons within three months. The police said it had so far exhumed eleven corpses from the mass graves in the area. But efforts to get the police to confirm the alleged incident of jungle justice on Sunday failed.

The robbers were identified as Terkaa Jabi, aka Gajere; Terkimbir and Paul Damsa and they were stripped naked before being stoned to death.

It was further learnt that the robbers met their waterloo when they trailed and attacked a vehicle coming from Cross River State, close to the house of the District Head of Mbayegh, Chief Nathaniel Hoyo.

The suspects, who were said to have attacked the vehicle as well as its occupants in the early hours of Sunday, ran out of luck following a call said to have been put through to the police by the district head.

Chief Hoyo was also said to have mobilized youths who went in pursuit of the alleged robbers who escaped and took refuge in one of the caves on the Ushongo hills.

Furthermore, it was learnt that the combined team of security operatives and youths in the area embarked on a manhunt that led to the arrest of the suspected robbers.

Daily Independent, gathered that the recent killing of sixteen persons in the area, which was still fresh on their minds, may have triggered the anger in the mob who decided to drag the suspected robbers on the road and stone them to death.

As at the time of compiling this report, corpses of the suspected robbers were on display at the police station in Ushongo town.
