ABOUT 100 BUILDINGS DEMOLISHED IN MILE2 ESTATE, AMUWO ODOFIN

About 100 shops and other structures within Jakande Estate, Amuwo-Odofin, have been razed and hundreds of traders displaced when a demolition squad from the Lagos State Government stormed the estate, to restore sanity alleged sanity to the complex. 

The demolition came three months after the State Government, which the Secretary of the Jakande Landlord Association, Mr. Toba Johnson, disclosed demolished 12,000 shops with About 20,000 traders displaced. Sources said that the state government commenced the demolition exercise February 1st; over one week after the warning issued to the occupants of the structures had expired. 

Vanguard gathered that the State Government through the ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development issued a 7-day ultimatum on January 19, 2017, to owners of structures erected on drainages and walkways within the estate to remove them. The government argued that the structures were distorting the Estate Master Plan, and, should be removed to restore the original master plan of the estate drawn over 20 years ago. 

Of the structures demolished by the government were shops and other structures used by residents for business activities along the popular Fatgbem- Durbar road axis. 

It was learned that larger percent of the affected traders survive through the business activities carried out in the demolished shops. One of the affected traders, Mrs. Rosemary Nwachukwu, told Vanguard that she received the notice on Monday and the government commenced demolition two days after.

PREGNANT LADY, 5 OTHERS DIE FROM TRANSFORMER EXLPOSION

There was pandemonium at Tundunwada, Lugbe a satellite town in Abuja when a transformer exploded and electrocuted five persons, including a pregnant woman who recently relocated to the area. Another four persons were also said to have been injured during the incident, including a six-year-old boy, Destiny Okolo, who suffered injuries on his face and left ear. According to Punch, the transformer was on fire for about 10 minutes during which it sent devastating electric current to some residential apartments in the area. The Head, Corporate Communications and Community Relations, AEDC, Mr. Oyebode Fadipe, confirming the incident on Tuesday said investigation had commenced. “The incident happened around 9pm on Saturday, four persons injured about six persons died.” Fadipe, however, declined to speak about compensations for the victims as insisted by the victim’s families, until the cause of the accident had been established and a decision taken by the management.

NO MORE STREET TRADING IN UMUAHIA CITY CENTER - COUNCIL BOSS

Orient Daily gathered that the council began the enforcement of order prohibiting street trading and indiscriminate loading and picking of passengers within the congested Isigate, the city center on April 1. NAVAL OFFICERS AND TRUCK DRIVERS CLASH IN KIRIKIRI TOWN COMMUNITY

By Dickson Okafor Commercial activities within Kirikiri Town and its environs in Lagos were brought to a standstill recently, as truck drivers in the area clashed with some naval personnel stationed at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Kirikiri. It was gathered that the military men brutalised some members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Kirikiri chapter, following disagreements over toll collection from truck owners and drivers. The naval men, the truck owners and drivers alleged, were extorting money from the truck drivers before granting them access into the terminal of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in Kirikiri to load or offload containers. SEX CONSENT AGE RAISED FROM 12 TO 16 YEARS IN PHILIPPINES

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law a bill that raises the minimum age of sexual consent from 12 to 16, his office said on Monday, in a bid to protect minors from rape and sexual abuse. The Philippines until now has had one of the world’s lowest minimum ages of sexual consent, behind Nigeria’s age of 11, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). A joint 2015 study by UNICEF and the Center for Women’s Resources, a local non-governmental group, showed seven of 10 rape victims in the Philippines were children. One in five respondents age 13 to 17 reported experiencing sexual violence, while one in 25 experienced forced consummated sex during childhood, the study said. Under the bill endorsed by Duterte, which is gender neutral, any adult engaging in sexual contact with anyone 16 or under would be committing statutory rape, unless the age difference between them was three years or less and sex was proven to be consensual, and neither abusive nor exploi...
