Unidentified gunmen suspected to be members of cult groups on Sunday night killed eight people in Omoku town, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers State.
The Nation gathered that the bandits invaded the community at 9:00 p.m., shot sporadically, before killing those targeted.
The suspected cultists was said to have carried out a coordinated attack in three streets in the community.
A community source, said many residents of the area, especially those who fled the area had returned before the incident occurred.
A resident of the area, Chief Ezegohuru Chukudi Eluozo, said the incident caused panic and grounded Christmas celebration in the community.
Eluozo, who narrowly escaped the attack, noted that at least eight people died in the incident.
He blamed the attack on politicians in the area.
