OGUN STATE LOST 307 PEOPLE YEARLY TO ACCIDENTS - FRSC

Mr Clement Oladele, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, on Thursday, said that 307 people died in 428 road traffic crashes recorded in the state in 2015.
Oladele spoke during a courtesy visit to the Speaker, Ogun House of Assembly, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, at the assembly complex in Abeokuta.

The sector commander said that the 428 road crashes in 2015 represented five per cent of all crashes that happened in the country. He said that 32 road traffic crashes were recorded in August 2016, and by September, the figure rose to 47.

Oladele explained that most of the accidents were due to excessive speed which could have been avoided. “The FRSC management introduced compulsory use of speed limiter to reduce accidents, but majority of the people are yet to use this device,” he said. Oladele, who said that the reason for the visit was to collaborate with the state house of assembly on road safety, urged the lawmakers to enlighten the people in their constituencies.

“If we work together, we will promote humanity and there will be safety. We want to remove Ogun roads from the most dangerous highways in Nigeria; we can’t do it alone. “We want all the lawmakers to be members of the FRSC special marshals and we are ready to create a unit because we want you to be entrenched into road safety management,” he said. In his response, Adekunbi thanked the FRSC command in the state for what it had done so far in ensuring that the roads were safe. The speaker advised the FRSC to embark on total sensitization programs for both commercial and private drivers.

“Our people need sensitization and I believe that is one of the best ways to ensure safety on our roads. “You have a lot to do on the issue of speed limiters.

You need to engage most especially commercial road users, and I am sure we will get meaningful results,” he said. Adekunbi assured that the house of assembly was ready to collaborate with the FRSC in order to ensure that road crashes were reduced drastically in the state.
