OJO COMMUNITY HOLDS CONSTITUENCY MEETING WITH STAKEHOLDERS - FOCUSES ON SECURITY

As part of efforts to improve security in the State, Hon. Ogunyemi Lanre, Member, Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), Ojo II, has held a constituency meeting with stakeholders in the community on security challenges and how to combat same.
In his address at the meeting held on Wednesday at the Council Hall, Oto Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Secretariat, Ijanikin, Lagos, Hon. Ogunyemi said members of the LAHA are much concerned about the security situation in Lagos and had resolved to hold consultative meetings with stakeholders simultaneously in the 40 constituencies in the State with the theme "Community/Neighbourhood Policing Starts with You”.
He said the House of Assembly is of the conviction that there can never be any meaningful progress or development, especially on security, without the contribution and consultation with the people who are the benefactors of their respective mandates.
Responding, HRH, the Onijanikin of Ijanikin Kingdom, on behalf of other traditional rulers commended the efforts of the Lagos State Government by providing security equipment for the police in order to effectively combat crimes, but suggested that the citizens must support the police in their efforts with vital information on crimes, saying “These criminals live amongst us therefore the police should be assisted with useful information”.

On his part, Hon. Olufemi Musa, the immediate past Vice Chairman of Oto Awori LCDA, raised the issue of manpower and emphasised the need for collaboration amongst the police, the neighborhood watchers and other security personnel so that the communities will be secured.

Hon. Musa also talked about a comprehensive digitization of community policing where the Nigerian Police should have a platform where crimes can be reported without informants visiting the police stations and that Radio Stations should have 24/7 dedicated lines which people can call during emergencies.

The President of the National Youth Council, Oto Awori Chapter, Comrade Amosu Rasheed enjoined government to cub the criminal tendencies of the youths by gainfully empowering them, stressing that an idle hand is the devil's workshop.

He said the youths in the community are ready to embrace agriculture but they need financial support to acquire the necessary tools and implements needed.

Also speaking at the meeting, ACP Eze Godwin, Area Commander, Area K, pointed out that policing the community starts with each individual, saying, “Your actions determine how you secure yourself”.

He therefore advised informants to give information only to senior officers on duty when reporting crimes to avoid leakage, maintaining that the police are up to the task of reducing crimes to the barest minimum.
