KOREA COMMUNITY KICKS OFF FREE CATARACT SURGERY IN LAGOS

Efforts by the Lagos State Government to reduce visually impaired cases in Lagos gained a massive boost on Monday when the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), in collaboration with the Korean Community, kicked-off free cataract surgery for over 100 patients in LASUTH.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the representatives of the Korean team, the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof. Wale Oke commended the team for the gesture, saying “I am overwhelmed by your presence and good heart to give sight to patients who have cataract problems in Lagos State. You did over a hundred surgeries last year and here you are again all for free. Thank you. We are very grateful”.

The CMD however solicited for the assistance of the team in the area of training for LASUTH doctors to be able to carry out surgeries in highly technical areas and free procedures in other areas apart from cataract.

“We appreciate your support on cataract but we look forward to more in other areas of medicine and we are ready to sponsor our doctors to understudy your expertise in this area and other areas of medical practice.” Oke appealed.

Responding, the Korea Team leader, Dr. Kim thanked the LASUTH management for their hospitality and for providing a conducive environment for his team to carry out a successful program last year, while expressing optimism that this year’s effort will be greater.

He promised to look into the request of the CMD, stressing that the Korean Community is always eager to support and assist the present administration, through LASUTH, in the area of knowledge transfer.

This is the second series in the project being sponsored by the Korean Energy Production Company, KEPCO and Vision Care, with LASUTH providing the needed facility for a successful collaboration.
