LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT INITIATES YOUTH POLICY FOR MDA's

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, has initiated a robust uniformed policy framework for all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the implementation of youth related activities across the State.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Pharmacist (Mrs.) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf disclosed this at Alausa on Wednesday during a sensitization programme for policy makers on youth activities in MDAs, saying that the new policy framework was designed to align with the vision of the State government in providing avenue for harnessing the inherent potentials of youths in the State.

She added that the Lagos State Youth Policy is to ensure that all MDAs work in a cooperative and integrative manner in designing and implementing programmes and services in line with the strategies articulated in the policy to address youth development needs and opportunities.

According to the Commissioner, “The youth policy is meant to define the vision of the State for the youth and also provide a framework that would guide government’s approach towards ensuring that the larger numbers of youths are provided with a high quality of life for the realization of their potentials.”

“The policy which has the commitment of the State government, youths and the society at large in pursuance of youth growth and development also articulates the interventions and services that are envisaged in order to promote youth development and broader economic development.”

While maintaining that the policy identifies the existing categories of youths within the ages of 15-35years and the recognition of the 15 thematic areas that are crucial to the development of the youth, Akinbile –Yussuf said that the policy will support key strategic intervention that will be needed for the holistic development of the youths.

She said henceforth emphasis would be on addressing challenges among the youth in such areas like poverty eradication, empowerment, employment, education, health, agriculture, communication, science and technology. In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, said effective implementation of the youth policy will depend on an active institutional framework, robust political backing, and active administrative and technical support, stressing that the development would aid effective transformation of goals, objectives and strategies delineated in the policy into concrete programmes in the State.

He acknowledged that the successful implementation of the policy requires partnership with other stakeholders as everybody has prominent role to play in the development of the provisions of the policy.

Muri-Okunola therefore charged all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies involved in youth development to embrace the policy and work towards the actualization of the objectives and goals of developing the Lagos State Youth Policy.
