The Comptroller of Prisons (CP), Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), Tinuoye Olumide, has urged both the Federal Government and the judiciary to commute the life sentences of 168 condemned inmates across the state to life imprisonment.
Olumide made this disclosure at the welcome ceremony organized by the Deputy Controller of Prisons (DCP), Kirikiri Female Prisons, Mrs. Lizzie Ekpendu and inmates for him in Lagos.
It was gathered that 168 condemned inmates were spread across the Maximum Prisons in Kirikiri Town, Apapa, and Ikoyi.
Fielding questions from newsmen, the CP, who resumed work in Lagos last month, unveiled his plans for the command and prisoners in general.
"The problem we have majorly is that of inmates awaiting trial. I intend to liaise with the Ministry of Justice so that inmates, who have stayed longer do not have any reason to be in the prisons.
"Another thing I want to address is the issue of condemned prisoners. As I speak now, we have a total of 168 condemned inmates.
Globally, nations are gradually leaving the issue of capital punishment.
"I would ensure that for those who are condemned, their sentences should be converted to life imprisonment. That way, we would be able to decongest the cells. We have a lot of prisons that can take life imprisonment inmates."
