On Friday the 18th of March 2016, LiteraNation, a nonprofit literary
organization hosted a book reading/ open mic event. The event took place
at Jacob Montessori School, Agboju, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos state and
featured as special guest, Nigerian sensational writer, Hymar David, who
was ably represented by Nigerian Poet and founder The Poetry Court,
Osigwe Benjamin.
The event focused on the importance of promoting a strong reading
culture among pupils -not just as regards academic reading but also in
leisure reading- in order to create a positive environment for well
rounded literacy to flourish.
At exactly 8:30am, working with the theme “What good books can do”,
the proprietor of the school and ten members of her staff alongside
three executive members of LiteraNation; Brenda Nwafor, Adenike Adeniyi
Superb, and Blessing Igwemadu spearheaded the event. The team spent
ample time discussing the importance of book reading with the children
and the vital role schools and teachers play in helping every child
learn how to read and write.
The open mic segment revealed a cast of prolific young pupils whose
reading skills and works showed a lot of promise. Each contestant
stirred the audience with well worded thought-provoking pieces. The
students were an impressive lot to say the least, a portrait of the
bright future of the Nigerian literary scene.
There were gift presentations to the students whose performances were outstanding.The
gifts ranged from writing materials to story books. The event ended on a
fantastic note, with the closing remark made by the school’s
proprietor. Impressed by the outcome of the event, she advised
LiteraNation to partner with publishers. She further stated that she
would assist in the establishment of a link between LiteraNation and
literamed Publishers or MacMillan publishers, two of the leading
publishing houses in Nigeria.
