SLUM2SCHOOL CELEBRATES CHILDRENS DAY IN MAKOKO SHANTY COMMUNITY

Written by Olusegun Aderogba
It's Children's day and I wanted to spend some time celebrating one child. I did, two actually.

It was an event organised by slum2school, so I decided to be a part of it.

The childen came out enmass to a near bye primary school.

We were attached to a child with the sole aim to document where they live and what they do at home.

Life definitely appears extremely different here, yet the people are living and happy. Children looking healthy inspite of the dirt, young people playing around happy. Sailing their boats and solving transportation problem for people in community.

Every things here happen on water. Dirty water

These people live on shanties, what we call top Grade slum, but today. I saw beyond that. One of them said "this is where I live and grew up. if the government sends us out us out of here, where would we go? I sighed. This place is largely populated with children playing every where.

I see how parents worked hard to make sure their children goes to school and how the children live to support themselves.

These children are strong they do unimaginable things like paddling a canoe and several others

Most of the workers do not speak English but a few of them understand Yoruba Language

One of the child whose house we visited, was sharing with us how she supports her mum with her smoked fish business after school hours, the other also learns barbing after school with his father.

No one would believe that such a place exist in a megacity next to where houses are sold for several breathtaking millions of Naira.

The elders of these community might have settled for the status quo. Perhaps they have more to gain than meets the eyes and as such they would resist any kind Change, but it will not be for too long. This is not a place designed for people created in the image of God.

I see a future. I see hope. I see a life beyond here. I see the future of this great community in the making. I see transformation, I see change. I see the heroes coming out of the colony to raise a nation who 'll despise the dirt and take their families to a brand new world.

God bless the people and keep the children in health. In Jesus Name Amen.

Thank you for reading. Kindly share also.
