KAKKAU COMMUNITY WOMEN RESORT TO GIVE BIRTH AT HOME INSTEAD OF HOSPITAL

By Lola SERIKI-IDAHOSA
About 85 percent of pregnant women living in kakkau community still give birth at home, reasons given by some pregnant women is as a result of the Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) which for the ten years of existence, the hospital run a permanent morning duty which start 7:30 am and close two o’clock in the afternoon, with seven staff.

This time of operation has force the pregnant women to their old belief of giving birth at home.

Kakkau community is located at chukun local government area, one of the fastest growing community, about two kilometre to Goningora with population of over 300, 000.

The community lacked social amenities, Current structure of the Primary Health Care, being used is a three rooms dilapidated building.

Majority of the people who live in kakkau community are indigenes and non indigenes of Kaduna state.

Speaking with a staff who would not want her name mentioned said that the major challenges facing the health care centre is running shift, staff’s strength of seven including the focal point of the hospital (Doctor), most women still prefer home delivery because of their beliefs.

Also, she disclosed that during delivering, free commodities are being given to some pregnant women called packaged delivering kits, things found in the kits include markingtouch, soap, toilet soap and ten blade. But no free drugs for 0 -5 years.

Statistics of birth rate in health care centre from August 2015 to January 2017 shows that about 277 pregnant women gave birth, no case of death, no case of Hiv Aids, no case of VVF, no case of complications, no case of death.

Some of the complain from the locals includes poor health facilities, no basic amenities.

Some of the locals disclosed that they prefer visiting the chemist instead of the hospital, the reasons they gave was that the public health care is not reliable and ill-equipped.

The present building being occupied is nothing to write home about but works ongoing at the Permanent site.

It will be recalled that the Kaduna state government budgeted 250 million naira for maternal child health in 2017 budget for drugs, medical supplies and management agencies.

The free maternal and child health programme for both pregnant women and children under the age of five years is nothing to write about.

Current PHC structure for the community ongoing.
It is unfortunate that women and children of kakkau community suffered a set back as the primary health care is yet to enjoy these privilege.
